Born in Shanghai, Li Hu was sent to the countryside due to China’s Culture Revolution. He graduated from Shanghai University Fine Arts College, where he was appointed professor in 1989. After receiving an MFA in painting by the University of South Dakota in 1993, Li devoted himself to painting and to teaching art, subsequently obtaining an endowed professorship and emeritus professor status. His work is evocative of the cultural, social, and intellectual challenges of the postmodern era in the East and West. It reflects the interaction of biography and mythology, an intellectual and experiential history centered within the realm of his imagination.

Over the course of his career, Li Hu had more than forty solo shows and over hundred group exhibitions internationally and in the United States. His life story and oeuvre was featured in over ten books, including “Who’s Who in America”, “Who’s Who in the World”, and “One Hundred Outstanding Artists”, published in the USA and in China. In May 2018, Ningbo Museum of Art in China inaugurated the Li Hu Art Gallery, in which some of Li Hu’s major artworks are permanently displayed.
